A month of Thanks: Celebrating Local Businesses
A MONTH OF THANKS: CELEBRATING LOCAL BUSINESSES
By Tracey Lisee, Director, Cerulean Beauty & Spa at the Mystic Marriott
As November wraps us in cooler air and cozy sweaters, it also reminds us to pause and give thanks — not just at the dinner table, but all around our community. This month, I invited residents to share a “shoutout of thanks” to the local businesses that make a difference in their daily lives.
COMMUNITY BUILDERS AND GIVERS
Local merchants do more than sell goods or provide services — they build relationships. They greet us by name, ask about our families, and remember the little things that make us feel like more than just customers. These small interactions create a sense of belonging that no online transaction ever could. Every local business represents someone’s dream. It’s the result of passion, perseverance, and countless late nights. When we choose to shop local, we’re investing in those dreams — and in the economic health of our community. Studies show that for every dollar spent at a local business, significantly more stays in the local economy compared to national chains.
HERE’S WHAT OUR NEIGHBORS ARE SAYING
“If you want to go to a place where everyone knows your name, it’s Stonington Pizza. They treat everyone as if you were one of their own and they have amazing food.”
- Kristin A. Stonington, CT
“Sammy Lu, the owner of Natural Nails in Groton does such an amazing job. She does the innovative “Builder Gel” that she recommended after a severe reaction to another product at another salon. She not only helped, she ensured my nails looked pristine.”
- Tamin C. East Lyme.
“Shout out to PopOvers in Mystic! The food is homemade comfort food with seasonal specialty coffees. The owner Pam is an active member of the Mystic Community who is always willing to help a small business.”

“My spot is the Mystic Pet Shop in Mystic. The owners John and Genevieve are truly a treasure for local pet owners. They do their research and are always willing to offer advice tailored to the unique needs of each fur baby and pets alike. I trust them inherently because of their products for my Chara and Remy.”
- Lynda R-S. Mystic
“I recently discovered Fat Tuna in Niantic over the summer. The food and service were equally great. It had a great vibe and I hope they stay open year round.”

“Old Lyme Inn has been our favorite place to host many family holiday and special occasion dinners and brunches. But the best part is you don’t need a special occasion to go. They are the special occasion.”
- Alyx R. Essex
“Sea Glass & Linen in Niantic owned by Beata Kirschbaum is a beautiful mix of gently used and new. It has a coastal vibe full of fashion, home goods, and jewelry.”
- Sherri F, Pawcatuck
Thank you to those who shared their thoughts. These gestures, small as they may seem, mean the world to a merchant who’s poured their heart into their work. Remember to shop small businesses this upcoming holiday season.
Be well, spa often, wear your sunscreen.
